07/09/2023Nail shape: which one to choose
Nail shape is an important aspect to consider in creating a flawless manicure. In order to choose the most suitable one, it is necessary to keep in mind not only the client’s preferences, but also the natural conformation of the fingers and the type of manicure to be achieved. Let’s look at some examples.
Almond nails
Choosing the most suitable nail shape for one’s hand depends on many factors, first and foremost thevisual effect one wants to achieve on one’s client’s hand: if the aim is to make the fingers look more tapered, it is preferable to opt for almond-shaped or rounded-shaped nails, while those who are satisfied with their fingers can also freely opt for squarer nails.
At the same time, it is appropriate to consider thewidth of the nail bed so that the chosen shape is harmonious and proportionate and the natural shape of the nail, to be related especially to the length.
Once these aspects are clarified, one can consider the first alternative, namely almond nails: this shape is characterized by having a very wide base that narrows toward the tip, which is soft and rounded, however thin. It is a solution that makes the hand fine and elegant, perfect for those who want to have tapered hands. The only caution to keep in mind before making this nail shape is to make sure the client has a minimum nail margin length.
This nail form is very versatile and can be done on all types of hands as long as there is a minimum nail length of 2-3 cm. This layout is popular with stars all over the world, including Lana del Rey who just can’t do without it. To make it, simply follow a few steps:
- after preparing and cutting the nails to the same length, take a file and angle it slightly toward the center of the nail.
- By filing the sides, create a tapered shape following the natural curve of your fingers. Take care to intervene in a specular and harmonious manner on both sides;
- Round off the ends after you get the tapered shape.
This shape should not be confused with pointy nails, the conformation of which is reminiscent of the claws of the animal world because of the particularly sharp tip.
To fully enhance this nail shape, one can opt for a highly pigmented semipermanent nail polish such as that of the LACTUBE™ line: thanks to the great precision of the applicator, it is possible to spread the product satisfactorily from the first pass, avoiding transparency thanks to an even distribution.
Stiletto nails
Stiletto nails are also called pointed nails, precisely because of their pointed shape. They are an evolution of “almond nails” and are characterized by an even more tapered shape. They can be performed either on the natural nail or by making use of gel nail design. At first glance they may seem impractical in everyday life and, indeed, require some getting used to, especially the first few times. But then they become like heels: you can’t do without them anymore.
Ballerina nails
Ballerina nails, also known as Coffin, is one of the trends of the moment. As the name suggests, the lines are reminiscent of those of shoes worn by ballet dancers: the shape is a hybrid of stiletto and boxy, ensuring a geometric toe and thin sides. Compared with other solutions, it helps to make the hand more tapered, although it is not the preferred option when you have the feeling of stubby fingers.
Much loved by influencers and divas on the catwalk, but also particularly delicate in that it tends to break very easily: hence, those who want this manicure must resort to gel reconstruction or reinforced semi-permanent gel.
To make ballerina nails you can keep in mind a few cautions:
- after preparing the nails, use nail clippers to get a square-shaped base and make sure they are all the same;
- proceed with filing the sides, with diagonal movement toward the center, creating the acute angle on the sides of the nail and gradually creating the ballerina nail shape. Proceed carefully so as not to create optical mismatches between the two parts;
- rounds the ends to achieve a slightly rounded shape, in a more or less pronounced manner depending on the client’s preferences and the aesthetic harmony of the nail itself.
Ballerina nails can be enhanced with nail polishes (semi-permanent or traditional) of different colors: they are often combined with decorations and nail art and, in this case, it is preferable to opt for a gel manicure, capable of ensuring maximum hold and durability.
Square nails
The square nail shape fits a variety of lengths, but offers optimal results on medium-length nails. In this case, the end of the nail has square, well-defined corners. It has been one of the most popular forms in the past: how can we forget the white square nails worn by Miley Cyrus?
Square nails are not particularly suitable for those with poorly tapered fingers or a wide nail bed. Sharp tip definition may not improve the situation and accentuate the client’s natural non-slender finger conformation.
From a practical point of view, square nails are easy to make: with the help of a nail clipper, you can cut them to the desired length and then file down the sides to avoid excessively sharp and annoying corners.
When preparing to create a manicure that satisfies the client and enhances the natural shape of the fingers, it is necessary not only to rely on the technical skills of those performing the manicure, but also on the products that are used.
